Agnes Applesby is atypical for a woman, for she avoids wearing any make-up that might amplify her beauty. She always wears ankle-length dresses, making sure no one can see her body. It’s as if she does not want the arduous job of keeping up her appearance for some guy. Her almond-shaped eyes have intrigued many men, each with their own angle on her true nature.

Ma and Pa Applesby agonize over the possibility that Agnes Applesby might remain single all of her life. After all, one cannot simply say, “Abracadabra,” and a man only interested in her mind will magically appear.
